Season 2022/23 Curriculum (Covid-19 Plan)

The Victoria Children’s Choir curriculum aims to deliver a holistic music education which encompasses a variety of elements of music/choral education in order to introduce our choristers to the transformative power of Music. 

 

Elements of choral education:

  • Vocal Technique

  • Music Theory and Sight Singing

  • Musicianship (interpretation, music history and music language)

  • Choralography (choral choreography)

  • Ensemble work : music skills ( blend, balance, harmony, synergy) + social skills (leadership, personal responsibility, negotiation, social etiquette, activism)

PRELUDE CHOIR (Ages 7-9)

​

Scenario 1  (masks optional)

  • One hour of professional choral instruction weekly from September to June.

  • Musicianship (theory) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Performances in our two Signature Concerts - December and June

  • An afternoon camp in September and March. To welcome, inspire and engage.

Scenario 2 (limited restrictions)

  • 45 minutes of professional choral instruction weekly from September to June. The choir will be split into three groups of up to 20 with socially distanced barriers.
    (4:00 - 4:40pm, 4:45 - 5:25 and 5:40pm - 6:10pm)

  • Musicianship (theory) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Virtual live-stream concert in December and in June.

  • An afternoon camp in September and March. To welcome, inspire and engage.

Scenario 3 (enhanced restrictions)

  • One hour of online vocal training and musicianship instruction. 30 mins of group warm-ups, ensemble singing, repertoire discovery and choralography. 15 mins of musicianship and 15 mins of individual showcases.

  • Students will be encouraged to send personal singing videos throughout the week for private instruction.

  • Opportunities to virtually sing with other programs across Canada in an online “big-sing”. 

  • Virtual concert in December and choral compilation music video created for June.

RECITAL CHOIR (Ages 10-12)

​

Scenario 1 (masks optional)

  • Two hours of professional choral instruction weekly from September to June (Fridays, 4:15 - 6:15pm)

  • Musicianship (theory) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Choir Camp – one overnight camp during the season.

  • Performances in our two Signature Concerts - December and June

  • Many regional performance opportunities throughout the season.

Scenario 2 (limited restrictions)

  • One hour of professional choral instruction. The choir will be split into two groups of up to 20 with socially distanced barriers. (4:15 - 5:15pm and 5:20 - 6:20pm)

  • On-line musicianship training (theory/composition/sight-singing/ear-training) weekly.

  • Two day-camps (Fall and Spring)

  • Several opportunities for music-related online “team-building” activities (talent show, music trivia night, choral watch party, sing-alongs, online events and collaborations)

  • Virtual live-stream performance in December and in June

Scenario 3 (enhanced restrictions)

  • One hour of online professional choral instruction weekly from September to June

  • Online Musicianship (theory / composition / music appreciation) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Online Ear-Training (Intervals, chords, solfege, sight-singing, rhythmic/melodic dictation)

  • Several opportunities for music-related “team-building” activities online (talent show, music trivia night, choral watch party, sing-alongs)

  • Virtual live-stream performance in December and June

  • Opportunities for online events and collaborations

CONCERT CHOIR (Ages 13-18)

​

Scenario 1 (masks optional)

  • 4.25 hours of in-person professional choral instruction weekly.

  • Musicianship (theory) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Monthly sight-singing master classes

  • Workshops with choral clinicians and collaborations with other Canadian choirs

  • Two over-night Choir Camps in September and January

  • Performances in our two Signature Concerts - December and June

  • Many local, national and sometimes international performance opportunities throughout the season.

Scenario 2  (limited restrictions)

  • 3-4 hours in-person professional choral instruction weekly, taught in small groups (maximum of 20 persons)

  • Online Musicianship training to include Music Theory, Sight-Singing and Music Appreciation instructional videos and practical assignments

  • 1 hour of video recording coaching, or interdisciplinary art workshop (drumming, song writing, conducting)

  • Workshops with choral clinicians and collaborations with other Canadian choirs

  • Two day-camps in September and January

  • Virtual live-stream performance in December and in June

  • Optional Virtual choir recordings throughout the year
     

Scenario 3  (enhanced restrictions)

  • 2 hours online professional choral instruction weekly, taught in small groups

  • Individual feedback and coaching via video recordings or Zoom sessions

  • Online Musicianship training to include Music Theory, Sight-Singing and Music Appreciation video instructions and practical assignments

  • 1 hour of video recording coaching, or interdisciplinary art workshop (drumming, song writing, conducting).

  • Workshops with choral clinicians and collaborations with other Canadian choirs

  • Virtual live-stream performance in December and June

  • Optional Virtual choir recordings throughout the year

 

 

YOUTH ENSEMBLE (Ages 17-20)

Scenario 1 (masks optional)

  • 1.25 hours of professional choral instruction weekly from September to June (Fridays, 6:30 - 7:45pm)

  • Musicianship (theory) training specifically tailored to choral singers.

  • Performances in our two Signature Concerts - December and June
